NHS Learning Support Fund

2023/24 application window update

Nursing and midwifery students will be eligible for additional support of at least £5,000 to help with living costs with funding from the NHS. The funding will be given to new and continuing degree-level students.

The funding comes as part of the government’s pledge to increase nurse numbers by 50,000 over the next five years.

You will receive at least £5,000 a year, with further funding available for eligible students:

  • £1,000 for specialist disciplines that struggle to recruit
  • £2,000 for childcare costs
  • Exceptional Hardship Fund of up to £3,000.

The funding will not have to be repaid by recipients. You will also be able to continue to access funding for tuition and maintenance loans from the

NHSBSA have noticed a number of Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses (TDAE) and Exceptional Support Fund (ESF) applications being submitted for students on the 2020/21 cohorts. The system is designed so that until the confirmation of attendance exercise has been completed, payments for the Training Grant and Parental Support will not be made. This will also mean students won't be able to access the TDAE and ESF forms for this academic year until these payments have been approved.

If students send in old forms they will be rejected. Please be advised you will not be able to apply for TDAE and ESF until attendance has been confirmed on or around 1 November.

Please check you are using the correct application system when applying for NHS LSF. NHSBSA received a number of queries about missing courses and it has transpired students have been trying to apply on BOSS. NHSBSA want as many students as possible to be able to access the additional funding available through NHS LSF and it's important to avoid any unnecessary delays.

Students currently in the 2019/20 cohort or making a claim for 2019/20 should continue to submit their TDAE/ESF applications using the old LSF system as they would usually do so:

For those students where NHSBSA have received a completed form from the University confirming students require extensions, and who have an existing LSF account, NHSBSA are now starting to schedule payments and students will receive an email from them in due course. NHSBSA are in the process of contacting students who aren't currently registered on the LSF system to let them know what you need to do.
